A beach umbrella holder that drills its own anchor into the sand, powered by a 20,000 mAh battery that doubles as a phone charger, and topped with a table that folds out.

The problem

The client had a main body assembly and 2D concept drawings for the next version. Turning the second into the first meant solving several things at once:

  • A gearbox, motor, gyroscope and PCB all had to fit inside a body that still had to be mouldable — no undercuts hiding in the corners where the gears wanted to sit.
  • The auger takes reaction torque. Whatever twists into the ground twists against the user’s grip; that load path runs through the housing.
  • The top had to become a tripod-style table, replacing the existing flat mount.
  • The umbrella itself was undefined — the concept drawings showed 3, 4, 5 and 7-sided variants, and a mechanism cannot be designed for all of them.

The approach

  • Pin the variables before modelling. The umbrella was fixed at the four-mount version, based on tent poles and a telescopic stand, so the mechanism had a single target.
  • Internals arranged for moulding, not just for fit. Motor, gearing and board were positioned so the surrounding walls could draw cleanly, with wall thickness kept even to avoid sink marks on a visible product.
  • Torque path routed into the body, so the reaction from drilling is carried by structure rather than by the battery bay or the cosmetic covers.
  • The gyro question asked early. Whether a gyro-triggered twist action would work reliably in a vertical drilling attitude was raised before it was designed around.

The result

Revised body internals, a redesigned tripod table mount and the auger detail — delivered as 3D files, renders and manufacturing-ready geometry.

Where this applies

Powered consumer products where a drivetrain, a battery and a moulded shell compete for the same volume. Packaging is the design; the surfaces are what is left over.
