Bedside Book Pouch with Integrated Gooseneck Reading Light
A hooked fabric pouch that hangs over a headboard and carries a book plus a reading light — soft goods geometry turned into a model a manufacturer can work from.
Sometimes the deliverable is not a machined part — it is a fabric product a manufacturer has never seen, made real enough to be quoted.
The problem
The client had a sketch: a pouch, 13 × 9 in, in leather or heavy fabric, with two flexible hooks over a standard headboard, holding a book and a gooseneck reading light.
The engineering questions hide behind the softness:
- Hooks over an unknown headboard. Headboards vary in thickness, so the hooks have to flex without losing grip or marking the wood.
- The load is off-centre. A book sits away from the hook line, so the pouch wants to rotate and pull away from the headboard.
- The light moved mid-project — originally on the side, then requested over the top — which changes where its mass and its cable go.
- Two-tone colour was requested for presentation, meaning the model had to carry material separation, not just shape.
The approach
- Panels laid out as a maker would cut them, so the model translates into pattern pieces rather than into a surface no one can sew.
- Hook flexibility treated as a material property — the grip comes from the hook section being compliant across the range of headboard thicknesses.
- Light mount relocated to the top edge as requested, with the mass placed close to the hook line to reduce the rotating moment on the pouch.
- Two-tone materials modelled properly, so renders show the real seam and colour split instead of a painted-on effect.
The result
A finished 3D model and presentation renders across four iterations, ready to show to a manufacturer or to buyers.
Where this applies
Soft goods that need engineering attention: bags, covers, holders, organisers. Someone still has to decide how it hangs, where the load goes and how it is cut.
