2.5 L Desk Hydration Pod in Anodised Aluminium and Tritan
A portable water pod with a coiled silicone straw, magnetic mouthpiece and a pop-out refill tube — hidden threading between metal and plastic, sealed for daily use.
A 2.5 litre water container that lives beside a desk or a chair, drunk through a bite valve on a positionable straw, refilled without lifting seven pounds of water to a tap.
The problem
The specification mixed materials that do not naturally join:
- Anodised aluminium centre body, Tritan domes. Metal and plastic with different thermal behaviour, meeting at a joint that must not leak and must not show a visible thread.
- Food-safe sealing with a replaceable O-ring, because a seal that cannot be serviced becomes a disposable product.
- A refill tube that pops out and extends about a foot, stored coiled inside or outside the body, with a button to release it, a valve to stop drips and a path that lets it retract smoothly.
- A magnetic mouthpiece on gooseneck tubing that holds its shape, with recessed magnets in the base for attachment.
- Seven pounds when full, carried by a handle latch that has to be secure and removable.
The client also asked whether the whole thing could be double-wall vacuum insulated aluminium instead — a question worth answering before it was designed.
The approach
- Hidden threading at the metal-plastic joint, so the seamless look survives while the joint stays serviceable and the gasket stays replaceable.
- The insulation question answered honestly. Double-wall vacuum construction is not achievable in this shape at this weight; the trade-off was explained and alternatives noted rather than quietly attempted.
- Refill mechanism designed as a system — compartment, release button, valve and retraction path treated as one problem, since a tube that will not go back in is a returned product.
- Waiting for what was missing. Where component dimensions were not final, the recommendation was to wait rather than design around numbers that would change.
The result
A complete design for body, domes, sealing, straw system and refill mechanism — including the additional detailing the client requested for the tube storage container.
