Cocktail Shaker in 304 Stainless with Lever Valve and Slide-Off Strainer
A bar shaker engineered as a mechanism — cylinder valve, lever pour, detachable strainer and moulded measuring grooves, all in food-safe stainless and silicone.
A bar shaker that pours through a lever-operated valve instead of being cracked open — which turns a simple vessel into a sealed mechanism that has to survive a dishwasher.
The problem
Every requirement pointed at material and sealing:
- Food safety throughout. Body, valve, strainer and seals all had to be specified as food-contact materials — 304 stainless for the body, food-grade silicone for seals and grips.
- The valve has to seal against liquid under shaking, then open cleanly on a lever.
- The bottle opener needed reinforcement — thicker 304 so repeated levering does not deform it.
- The second strainer had to detach without twisting off. The client was explicit: it should slide in and out, which rules out the usual threaded or bayonet answer.
- Citrus and repeated washing attack seals and crevices, so anywhere liquid can sit is a design defect.
- Late in the project, two extra measure sizes (0.5 oz and 0.75 oz) were added to the small shaker.
The approach
- Slide-fit strainer retention using a captive rail rather than a thread, so the part comes off in one motion but cannot rotate loose in use.
- Grooves as moulded geometry. Stirring and measuring grooves were placed to survive the extra measure sizes without redrawing the vessel.
- Silicone confined to serviceable seals, sized so they can be removed and replaced rather than being trapped where cleaning cannot reach.
- Rubber base pad integrated into the small shaker to stop it walking on a bar top.
- Sequenced priorities. The client ranked lever and strainer above other features and the cylinder valve first of all; work followed that order rather than the model’s convenience.
The result
A full assembly across three iterations, with materials specified per component and the valve, strainer and opener detailed for manufacture.
Where this applies
Food and beverage hardware where sealing, cleanability and material compliance all apply at once. The mechanism is the easy half; the seal and the wash cycle decide whether it survives.
