Trim-to-Fit Car Mat with a Moulded Liquid Pocket
A universal rubber floor mat cut to size along perforated lines, with a moulded pocket that catches meltwater and sludge — flow paths designed to actually reach it.
A universal car mat with a pocket moulded into it to hold the water, snow and sludge that comes in on boots — cuttable to fit any vehicle along perforated lines.
The problem
The client had drawings and a cardboard mock-up. Reviewing them raised the question the concept had not been tested against:
- Will the water actually get there? The pocket sits at the seat-side edge. Liquid arriving anywhere else has to travel to it, and a mat with a thickness difference but no directed path will simply hold water where it lands.
- Trim-to-fit fights the moulding. Perforated cut lines have to pass through a rubber section thick enough to be durable, without weakening the mat where it is not cut.
- The pocket may not be mouldable in one piece with the mat, depending on the rubber process — which is a manufacturing question, not a design preference.
- One-handed removal. The mat has to be liftable, emptied and washed without spilling what it collected.
The approach
- The flow question raised before modelling. The client had accounted for a thickness difference but had not tested whether liquid reaches the pocket — that was flagged, and channels designed to route it deliberately.
- Directed channelling into the pocket, so the collection feature works by geometry rather than by chance.
- Perforation lines placed on the sizing envelope common to cars, vans and even farm equipment, so trimming lands in sensible places across the range.
- Manufacturing route left open. Whether the pocket is moulded integrally or produced separately and assembled was flagged for the rubber manufacturer to confirm during production planning.
- Three iterations, refining both the channel layout and the trim-to-fit concept as the client’s universal-fit ambition grew.

A complete design with drawings for a universal trim-to-fit mat with integrated liquid pocket and directed drainage.
